The legendary Rolex Cosmograph Daytona wristwatch traces back at least to 1961, when Rolex began manufacturing the Rolex Cosmograph. Rolex was a sponsor of the 24 Hours of Daytona race at the time, and named its new chronograph watch after that famous race. It was a brilliant marketing ploy. Due to its limited production and increasing popularity, the stainless steel Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is considered a very rare and collectible watch to own. The Rolex Cosmograph Daytona is also one of the most expensive watches marketed enough to be readily recognised by non-enthusiasts, and is often worn for this reason. The Daytona comes in several models in steel, gold, or a combination of steel and gold. Within these metals, one can also choose from a variety of dial colors, leather strap or gold bracelet, and jeweled and non-jeweled versions.
